All my three instruments received extra DSP modules without any firmware upgrade. The modules are instantly recognized by the system and become operative.

When I installed on the concerto the octave coupler patch, Viscount did not ask me how many DSP I had installed. They just said I might need to add some DSP to cope with the extra computing power required by the couplers. I did not add any module, at that time, and all worked kind of ok. But if you remove the modules, the organ cannot cope and either reduces the playing notes, or it stops sounding completely (like my Sonus with the homemade couplers). But if you want to try by yourself, push the tutti and lower both arms on the keyboards… à la Bach!

And regarding the sound difference with more DSP modules. I was voicing the concerto while waiting to receive the second 4DSP module. The organ comes by default with 8 DSP (4x2). I removed two 2dsp and installed the first 4dsp, so basically I had the same power (2x2+4 with one slot free). I voiced the whole organ, tuned the equalization and other stuff. Then the second 4dsp module arrived and I installed it. Suddenly the high frequencies became prominent and I thought something was wrong in my audio system. When I checked and everything was ok, I asked someone else if they noticed the same phenomenon and they confirmed. I had to revoice the organ again.

That’s all.

Well, I’m not a technician, nor do I have any exclusive information from Viscount.

My organ was supervised from Viscount from the beginning on. They planned the external speakers and amps and also made an identical intonation like the 500 on the Galanti festival. I wanted explicitly this organ (with Pipe 39). Well, some modifications had to be made due to lack of space.

Since I have seen on the internet that a 600 is available with Sub- and Supercouplers, I wanted to buy such a model. That was not possible at that time in Germany. I was quite frustrated and kinda angry (that’s me when I want something and don’t get it) and on short hand I wanted to buy a Rogers. So Viscount offered me an upgrade. They said, that additional DSPs are indispensable. They sent me the Upgrade PHY via email and the DSPs by snail mail. They warned me not to install the upgrade before I have installed the DSPs. Well, I was too curious and did so despite the warning. I thought or guessed that the organ might be overloaded when I play with many stops out, but I just wanted to test the Couplers with a few stops and single notes. Just snoopy.

But the organ did not boot after the upgrade and showed the error message that several DSPs are missing or defective. When the DSPs arrived, I did nothing but plug them in and the Organ booted. AOK.

So, what could that mean, what’s Your conclusion? Nothing but that the firmware addresses the DSPs. The DSPs are plug and play and it is regardless where they are plugged in and in which configuration – just like an USB device. But like an USB device something has to address it in order to make it work. Well that is my opinion due to my experience with the upgrade – but again, I’m not a techy per se.

Anyhow, my Organ did not fire up with the original amount of DSP-power. It needs a certain amount – or it won’t boot and show an error message instead.
Well, maybe the goal of having a 600 was a bit high (all DSP slots are fully equipped now, the old ones laying somewhere around) and with less requirements the organ would be kinda unpretentious. I don’t know.

What I also noticed – and there you are most likely right - is that after installing the upgrade and the DSPs, there were no more missing notes when playing in Hammond-style with all stops out. There is another thread somewhere in this forum about that topic.

So not only the couplers were added, but also more power in all. My hearing is due to my age (50+ and music all my life) too bad now to say something about the highest notes or the "air" surrounding them – whether this has improved or not, but it may very likely be so! At least, when I was 10 years younger, my biggest complaint about the new Physis technology was about what being – or better to say, not being – above 10 kHz (I mentioned that in that forum back then as well and supposed that this might be due too little computing power for the high frequencies and therefore not so good sounding mixtures compared to other technologies). Turn the wheel 10 years back and I could tell you whether the mixtures sound better now with maximum DSP-power. Unfortunately, and being honest, I can’t. Sorry.

I suppose there must be a minumun number of DSP installed for each specific model. So, for example, if the Sonus 40 requires 2 modules of 2 DSP and one is broken, the organ should detect it. This is just an assumption though, maybe @ahlborn can chime in and give his opinion, he is certainly more informed on these things than I. So I suppose that when you got your Unico 500 turned into a Unico 600, the new organ setup detected the missing DSP. Again, an assumption.

I added another 4 DSP module yesterday to the concerto and it was operative with the next startup. The octave couplers that I added are now fully operative without hesitations with the tutti.

As for the frequency range of the instrument, it reaches up to 15k Hz. I analyzed the spectrum some time ago, for other reasons, with a sampling rate of 48 kHz, and this is is the result:

Zitat

... maybe @ahlborn can chime in and give his opinion..

Good morning,
I will be happy to answer and give my opinion; unfortunately for two weeks I have been literally stuck with covid (which in my case was a much more aggressive form unlike a flu, although fortunately I am now recovering), and this prevented me from replying to some interesting threads in a timely manner. I plan to do it as soon as possible!

Is there a way to obtain these DSP Boards from Viscount?
On their website I cannot find information on that topic and how to purchase them.
And as Paolo's boards have been sold so quickly...

Best,

Stephan
