Johannus One2
#1 Johannus One2
Hi, apologies for the delay in replying.
I owned a first generation Johannus One for several years. I bought it so that I could play something with realistic organ sounds whilst deciding whether or not to buy a full 2 manual and pedal console later, which I did.
Given the type of music which I mainly like to play, it was important that there should be some beautiful sounding 8' flute stops, and in this regard the German disposition Hohlflote and Rohrflote were perfect! The Blockflute 4' was also sweet, both on its own and in combination.
However, I'm afraid to say that none of the other foundation stops sounded very realistic to me. Maybe I'm not experienced enough in the other schools of organ building but I've listened to countless CDs over the years so I have a reasonable idea.
Other people on this forum and elsewhere have stated that Johannus organs sound much more convincing when the stops are drawn in combination, 8+4, 8+4+2, etc, and this was true also of the One.
The other great detraction from the instrument was the unweighted keyboard although I eventually got used to it. In fact, it came in useful when playing the Piano and Harpsichord stops, which are very fine sounding.
I was recently able to try out a One2 for a short time, and my reservations regarding the 8' stops were not resolved, I think that the samples used are probably the same as the One (original) but I can't be sure.
In my opinion, the Harpsichord samples have been upgraded. This stop in the original One had a wonderful sound although by listening to the damper drop when releasing the key I could detect that each sample had been used for 3 adjacent notes, and indeed in other octaves. In the One2 I could not hear this effect and I can only hope that they are now using one sample per note.
An amusing thing to relate, is that I bought my daughter a Roland F701 digital piano shortly after, and the harpsichord sound on that is the same as on the One2! I can only assume that, with the One being a joint venture with Dexibell, and Dexibell having been formed by former employees of Roland, that maybe there is still some crossover of technology between Roland and Dexibell/Johannus.
One other feature of the One which I really appreciated, was the ability to load .fxp files into the User sections of the dispositions, and I was able to load a set of Harmonium samples (from the Dexibell website) and the Neo-classical samples from the Johannus website. It looks like this can still be done with the One2.
To summarize, it was a mixed bag and in retrospect I should probably have kept it! I think that you will only know if the One2 will suit you if you try it.
Good luck!
